Exploring Fitness in South Carolina

Tennis anyone?

In an effort to keep moving this summer, I mentioned in an earlier post that I joined a YMCA “Quad Tennis Series”, which was due to start this weekend. Due to low participation, the entire 8-week series was cancelled.  Needless to say, I was really bummed about it.  So in a last-ditch-effort, I started a Tennis Meetup Group for the Columbia-Lexington area.  Not sure if it will attract anyone, but nothing ventured, nothing gained.

If you happen to stumble across this blog and you would like to play tennis this summer, check out the meet-up page at: http://www.meetup.com/Columbia-Lexington-Tennis-Meetup-Group/ and send me an email @  lexcolatennis@gmail.com.

I also signed up on the “Let’s Play Tennis” located at:  http://www.letsplaytennis.com/results.php?loc=29063&search=Search

I can’t be the only person in South Carolina that wants to hit the tennis ball around?

Cheers

Is Mother Nature Mixed Up?

Another rainy, gloomy weekend in South Carolina. I thought the saying was, “April Showers Bring May Flowers.” So far, the first 5 days of May have been cloudy and dreary. I prefer that it rain during the week so that the weekends can be spent outside working in the yard, playing tennis, hiking, going to the beach, and the list goes on…

YMCA “Quad Series” rained out! Maybe next Sunday?

Luckily, the rain was intermittent yesterday and I was able to attend a tennis clinic at the local YMCA in Irmo, SC. Under the direction of tennis pro, John Atkinson, participants enjoyed two-hours of tennis play. It was a great introduction to the rules of tennis. It also allowed players to size up the competition. We all learned a valuable lesson on the importance of knowing how to keep score.

If you are looking for a great workout and the opportunity to make new tennis friends, it’s not too late to join the “Quad Series.” Over the next eight weeks, the YMCA, Northwest will be held each Sunday from 2-4 pm for beginner – intermediate level players.

For more information, contact John Atkinson at the YMCA, (803) 530-8150.

Back to the land of the living!

There is nothing like an illness to let you know who is boss!  It took over three weeks to shake a sinus infection/cold and get back to feeling like myself.  In the process, I think I gained about 8 lbs. Even at my worst, I never lost my desire to get back to my journey of healthy eating and living.

While I was able to attend several Zumba classes over the last three weeks, I was not able to exercise at 100% capacity.  I not only felt physically miserable, but I was really down mentally! Now, I can’t wait to get back to Zumba class and recommit to my exercise plan.

I am also excited to start walking again this week with the goal of participating in a local running event the first part of 2013.  For a complete listing of upcoming running events in South Carolina, check out this link to the Strictly Running Website.  Instead of putting a number value on how much weight I want to lose by the end of the year, I am going to set a plan in motion to begin walking and running. I will post the specifics of this goal shortly so I will have something solid to hold myself accountable.

I also plan to be more proactive regarding posting to this blog.  Today is a new day and I feel confident I can be successful with all my goals for the New Year.

How about you?

Fitness Derailed

I'd rather be working out! has been a long week.  After completing my first Kettlebell workout, I woke up Tuesday morning with a sore throat and dragging. A trip to the doctor confirmed I had picked up a virus.  Hoping that with enough medicine pumped into me, I might be able to get back on my feet and attend the M&M Fitness Zumba-versary on Thursday.  NOT!  The crud has sidelined me all week. I have simply had no energy the entire week.  I pray that I will feel strong enough to go back to work on  Monday and then back to Zumba on Tuesday!  It’s rough patches like this that make me truly appreciate my health!

Can’t wait to feel better.

Killer Kettlebell Workout!

Last night I participated in my first Kettlebell Workout!  WOW, am I out of shape.  Even with doing Zumba twice a week, the Kettlebell Workout showed me that I am not working all my muscle groups the same.  I thought with the number of squats we do at Zumba, I wouldn’t have any problems with weighted squats. WRONG!!! Thank goodness I can walk today, so I can go vote!!!

We did a 30 minute workout and I used a 5 lb weight.  I have a slight burn in my upper thighs and around my waistline.  I guess that old saying, “No pain, no gain” applies here.  Even though I am hurting a little, I can’t wait for next weeks Kettlebell Workout!  Thanks to Dan, our fearless leader, for guiding us through this class!

Getting it together before the holiday season!

Hello friends,

As the holidays fast approach, I have come to the conclussion that I need to get my act together when it comes to diet and fitness.  I cannot wait for the New Year to commit to a healthier lifestyle.  I have to start now!!!  For the next 20 days leading up to Thanksgiving, I am going to pledge to not drink any more Soda and I will scale way back on consuming bread and potato products.

If I can curb these three small areas, I feel like I will have a fighting chance of not gaining weight during November.  Plus, if I could add an extra day or two of exercise to my week, I might even be able to lose some pounds.

I will let you all know how it goes every couple of days, this way I will be more committed to this endeavor, if I am reporting my status to the World. LOL

Here is to staying the course! Over and Out! Karen
